Working with Best Friends

Most people think you just call up and say, "Go pick up these dogs." It is not so easy. It takes a lot of planning and preparation. Just getting our rig ready can take a while. Driving 3500 miles in 5 days takes a toll on the drivers and the rig. Then when you get back home, you have to go over everything and make sure it's functioning properly.

The Sumter Disaster Animal Response Team transported 165 dogs from the Midwest to Monmouth County SPCA for Best Friends Animal Society.

We did a total of 3 runs in 2009 and rescued more than 500 dogs with Best Friends. We have done 2 runs as of June 4th, 2010, transporting over 315 dogs to safety and forever home. What an honor it is to work with them. The caring way that they and all of the volunteers take care of the animals is beautiful to see.

Best Friends does such good work. It takes about a week of preparation on our equipment to ensure we have a great trip. Even then, we cut a tire in Ohio and with our own tools on board were able to change our tire in 20 minutes and fix the wiring on a brand new air/heat system.

This sweet girl just wanted to be loved. Look how attentive her eyes are. She followed me with her eyes everywhere I went and would smash up against the kennel just to be touched. Why would anyone do this?

Herkie, who belongs to Laura Bevan, rode in style in the new truck. I'm not too sure he was happy at the moment when he woke up to find a camera pointed right at him, but he did enjoy the trip.
